So, our first assignment was from Wes! He set all the kids to practicing music!! They had to sing a song for church.

Another practice session....it was hilarious because when I saw them practicing like this I knew what was going to happen at church....they were going to think they needed to stand on the chairs on the platform...sure enough..they all walked up to the platform and began to stand on the chairs....Wes smiled and quickly got them down.

Here is my monkey Josiah...he had to go with me everywhere. He always had to ride in my car and every time he had to leave me, he cried....it broke my heart.

Here we go driving our oldest car from Lousiana to Washington. There was no air conditioning, and the day we left it was over a 100 degrees! Leilah decided to help herself out and put a wet pair of kole's underwear (from water, not the other :) ) on her head.

Needless to say, the radiator of the car cracked after only driving an hour and a half. Dad said lets go back....I said, no way...this car is going to washington. Dad found some puddy to put on the crack, then we drove to an auto-parts store and bought a new radiator. We then drove another several hours until morning, where finally the puddy gave out on us. Thankfully, there was a little shop just a block away where they put our new radiator in that morning.

The kids were great--they drove so many hours in that hot car and they still managed to have fun!!!

This is a compilation of some of the videos I had taken while in Washington over the years. We showed it at her memorial.

If you wonder about the songs---the first was the song that my brother used to propose to Tanya--one of the phrases says "'I've looked around enough to know, that you're the one I want to go through time with" and the second song is a song that I remember tanya practicing to sing for church (in fact, the video with her in front of the computer with a guitar is when she is practicing the song).

I'm don't cry much, but I can't watch this without tears. I hope this consequence of our sin-ridden world will cause us to contemplate and rededicate ourselves to hasten Jesus' return by giving our hearts and all we have to Jesus.

This is the sermon tanya spoke a month after she discovered her breast cancer had spread to her liver. She talks about her walk with God and how one can understand there path on earth.

I haven't posted anything on our blog site since our trip to Puerto Rico. It was just after this trip that Tanya found her liver metastases. After that point, we began searching for help for Tanya-she had the most aggressive type of breast cancer and since it had spread to her liver she had a very poor prognosis (about six months to live). After several months we did find a place offering some treatments from SDC that could help her. By that time, her cancer had taken up most of her liver and she had enlarged lymph nodes in her arm and abdomen. The treatments began to work--her lymph nodes began to shrink significantly and her tumor markers returned to near normal. At that time, we entered her into a breast cancer study to harvest her white blood cells and grow a ton of them and then reinfuse them to Tanya. Unfortunatley, she had to stop the treatments from SDC during the trial. During that time, her lymph nodes in her abdomen grew so large that it began blocking her kidney vein and her liver metastases grew larger. After they harvested her white blood cells (and while she waited for them to grow them), she started one of the medications she had used at SDC to see if the cancer would shrink again. Sadly, she was now resistant to that one medicine and before she was able to switch to different one she had used at SDC (and before she ever received her white blood cells), Tanya passed away.

This is kole's creation...I like creativity, but Yamil tried to tell kole that he needed to build things a certain way..with walls and corners, etc. So after this, Kole only made squares. It made me sad.

Kole was afraid to do this, but after mommies help, he finally was able to do it by himself.

Rotating in the mycology/parasitology lab exposes me to interesting encounters. Today I had the "privilege" of identyfying this crawling organism. A maggot. Yesterday evening our little family was settling down in the front room of our house as the Sabbath approached. We have a large window which looks out to our front yard and a country road. As we were talking I noticed 2 young deer approaching our house from the tree line on the opposite side of the road.

I brought my son and wife's attention to them and for a few minutes we all watched happily as they pranced about. However my wife noticed they were getting quite close to the road and suggested that I scare them away from the road in order to avoid a tragedy, as I thought of how I could do this....SUDDENLY!!!...not even 5 seconds later....a Large pickup truck came speeding down the road startling the young deer to leave the safety of the ditch and run towards our side of the road......in HORROR we watched as the truck slammed head on against the first deer while the second one avoided it and ran quickly into our back yard....

I was speechless...my poor 3 year old son was confused as to what had happened...I was feeling very guilty for not having acted sooner....Could I have prevented this tragedy?....Were the passengers of the truck ok?... I quickly ran out to see the if the passengers were injured and discovered that they were fine... I then checked on the deer and with a great sadness saw the injured deer in a ditch breathing heavily and looking at me with fearful eyes....my eyes welled up with tears....................................

I returned home and was able to contact the local Wildlife Humane Society to collect the deer. They arrived half an hour later and drove off with the injured deer. I doubt it survived.

And the second deer? I don't know....

Our son has been asking both of us since then to explain to him what happened..He still is confused even 12 hours later... How do you explain sin and death to a 3-year-old? How do you rationalize it to make sense?

Leilah is very scared of animals. She will only put one finger on the horse and then pull away fast and clutch to me.

I have been a father over 3 years...and 10 months ago we added a second child to our little home. Over this time I have learned many tricks, shortcuts, and survival tips that I think I should share with the rest of the world. Here are a few, in no particular order, that I think are pretty important...

#1 When barefoot or in thin socks always.. and I mean Always! tread softly or lightly. (you never know when a metallic toy airplane wing will stab into your plantar fascia)

#2 Beware of innocent looking "water" puddles in the bathroom or kitchen! (they may be something else)

#3 Extra diapers are a must... you'll wish you had them when you are stuck patching together a toilet paper "diaper".

#4 Balloons are only fun when the string is long enough.... if not you will spend night & day retrieving the balloon from the ceiling for a crying child.

#5 Prepare to be sick a lot more often... the little ones seem to spread germs pretty good in the home.

#6 Markers, pens, crayons when indoors are the enemy unless you don't mind indoor murals.

#7 Potty training is more difficult than climbing Mt. Everest. It teases you with success to only fail at an inopportune time. So be patient.

#8 Children seem to sleep well in cars... however only while the car is running. So driving an extra few miles may be worth it to keep them resting peacefully.

#9 Sharing is a great trait to teach your child but can be confusing at times...sharing peanuts( or any other small choke object) with a 1 month old sibling is bad but sharing precious toys is good?

#10 You never ever have to buy toys... it is amazing how many toys just sprout out of nowhere. (neighbors, church members, grandparents, friends, etc...)

Hope this list is helpful to somebody as they endeavor on the wild adventure which is parenthood.

Last weekend my family accompanied me to Baton Rouge to attend a Medical License Orientation. While we were down there I also presented a Sermon and Health Seminar at a local spanish church.

[Update]: OK. I'm the resident "goat" until Tuesday. A "goat" is a person who is considered backup for our apheresis (used for autoimmune disorders) service. When the primary apheresis resident is unavailable the "goat" resident is activated. This is signaled by having a goat on your desk. We spent New Year's Eve at the Monti's house. I had to work earlier in

Well yesterday brush in our back yard was building up as well as
cardboard box parts so we decided to burn it. Kole was fascinated, as
any normal boy would be. A beneficial side effect of the fire was the
warmth it provided us in the cool winter weather.

First of all Merry Christmas and Feliz Navidad to everyone!!!

We spent the week before Christmas in New Jersey with my parents. Unfortunately I had to work Christmas week so we had to come back early.

Our Christmas Eve was spent flying back from Atlanta, GA after we missed our connection on our way back from Jersey. Lana was saddened for some reason when we missed our flight. Fortunately the Airline gave us some meal vouchers and a coupon at a nearby hotel to spend the night. We also were given (3) overnight travel kits which included the following:

1) Toothbrush and toothpaste

2)Razor with shaving cream

The unfortunate thing missing was diapers. We had no access to our check-in luggage which had our backup stash, leaving us with only the diapers in our carry-on luggage. This totaled 2 diapers for Kole and 4 diapers for Leilah. Our next flight was 12 hours later.....hmmmm.....hence our concern. So we begged for diapers from the baggage claim agent which provided us with several newborn diapers. They were tiny but hey...whatever we could get was good. So Kole was demoted to Leilah's diapers and Leilah down to the newborn diapers when we were running low of our supply. Anyways we made it back safely and tomorrow I head back to work.
